Help for a complete scrub

I'll be completely honest here, I've never played a Sub sim before, even though I thought about it several times. Few days ago I watched Das Boot, and immediately after it I went and bought SH3 on steam. I also installed GWX3.

Now I have no clue what to do next, I would appreciate any sort of helpful info, tips and tutorials for a (I cannot stress this enough) complete newbie.

p.s.

I almost gave up on registering to his forum since who ever designed the "random question" should be shot. I tried about 5 times to register by typing Hunley in that box and was denied every time, since you only need to type last 3 letters even though the question is "What's the name of the US Civil war sub". Ugh.

Welcome to SubSim Lezhaj.

I would suggest just playing the game and posting questions you have here.

You got off easy. I had to give a DNA sample.

Alright, here's the first one:

In the Naval Academy menu there is a "Watch Tutorial" button for some reason, that does nothing? What's that about?

I'll save you a little trouble and warn you that the tutorials will be very hard with GWX installed. The flak gun training one is impossible to pass (you get killed every time.) The only one that really is ok is the navigation one. You can try them to see how they work if you want to but, don't get discouraged if you do not pass. You can learn as you go, and we will answer any questions you have.

It has been years since I looked at the tutorials, so I have no idea about the button. Some one will know what it is.

Welcome Aboard!

So how should I go about the tutorials then? Since afaik they give you extra prestige when you start the career?

Thanks

From what i understand with GWX installed you automatically get the renown....

Revisions to the Renown System

Initial Renown Points — Stock Silent Hunter III granted renown points for completing training missions, with a maximum of 1500 points prior to starting your first patrol. GWX gives you 1500 renown points to start your career without having to take the training missions.

Taken from the GWX website

Yes. Pass the Navigation course and you get all the Tutorial renown in one drop. After that you can use the tutorials as you like, or not. It makes no difference except to you.

Nice, I passed the navigation.

One question, how do I get to the Radio Messages screen other than M key?

Unfortunately, you don't. 'M' is the only way.

Welcome Lezhaj.

You can make a new mod, like I did for voice recognition, to change the commands.cfg file for your language. File found in data\cfg.

Now there is Jimimadrid's SH_Keymapper which works on any of the Silent Hunter 3-5 series.

One question, what year/flotilla is a good option for a beginner?

Also where can I find a good guide on manual torpedo aiming? This game is hard and no decent tutorials for it to be found :/

Also, thanks for all the welcomes

p.s.

Just tried out the carrier, and for some reason FPS is pretty low at the start, in the port. Didn't have any other fps problems otherwise?

1939-1940 would be the best years to start in because the allied ASW skills are at their lowest then. Once they gain experience, they become much harder to evade. By starting in those years you can gain valuable experience in evasion tactics which will help you later on in the war.
