You only have so many torpedoes in your loadout... use them for tonnage and get more renown. One well-placed torpedo on a T3 pays almost twice the renown than one torpedo sinking a lowly V&W Destroyer, not to mention the tonnage difference. The only time I attack a DD is when I'm in shallow waters, the DD has detected me and I have no more depth below me to aid my escape.
