In days gone by, I would wear long johns, but I find them too restrictive and a PITA to put on and take off. IF I was spending a long time out in the cold, then I would consider wearing them again.

When working as a cop, myself and a few others would wear a pair of tights, they are much less restrictive than long johns but prone to tears and rips when going to answer a call of nature.
A pair lasted one shift so you tended to purchase the cheapest you could find but obviously had the wife or a female friend go to the shop for you
