Too much wind, spinning too quickly, safety mechanism(s) fail...end result:

Wind exceeded design specs.

We had our own spectacular windy turbine a couple of years ago.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/...-fireball.html ![]() I hope those blades that detached weren't made by Betonov. ![]()

Well they're certainly shorter now.

I hope what we designed last year won't break apart. Those blades are 3 times longer.

It is also important to remember there there is a whole lotta force being generated by these rotors.
I suspect that people are working on designs that would automatically feather the rotors if the rpm exceeds a threshold.

Considering how fast it was rotating, how heavy those things are and how long it took to finaly break, those are some quality blades. I wonder if they were built by SSP technologies.

The turbine was built by Nordtank, and operated by Vestas, but can't find who manufactured the blades, but the farm was built in 1996 and SSP came into life five years later.
This occurred in 2008.
