Editing the py file manually was the only way to change New UI's options until when TDW introduced his option viewer/editor. The mistake was around the corner though, and most errors resulted in CTD's or the UI getting corrupted. I don't remember the firts New UI's version which had the editor included in its package, but when it was released you probably weren't a subsim member yet.
