the game wont "register" it as sunk but if you hit it in open water it will sink deep enough to "vanish" from going deep enough to no longer be rendered by the game. bottom line is the I-400 is worthless to you so save your torps for something you will get credit for sinking
the sub was never meant to be anything but visual eye candy as previously mentioned so the I-400 will sink when you hit it but the smaller 2 man sub will never sink under any condition so don't waste time on that little thing if you find one sitting in a port somewhere, unless you just want to see it fly into the air like popcorn |

You can still get a kill with it on the surface and credit. Heck, sometimes it takes awhile to sink after you sunk it.
