I agree fully with you - but also, that I know some of them require the mission logs from all players as part of the scoring players. Non-members aren't likely to bother, don't you think? Also, in the case of a cheater, it's easier to remove him from a closed system than an open one.

A closed group not playing anyone else will end up stagnating. Someone once suggested real navies are keeping an eye on what we're doing in the sim community, for just this sort of reason. If it's true or not, who knows.
