Das Boot. Best film ever?

I wouldn't call it the best movie ever, but it is a very good one, and probably the best - most realistic - submarine movie so far.

Too many war movies paint war clean and tidy, and as entertaining popcorn movies.

I recommend to watch Das Boot as the 410 minutes miniseries, of which there are two versions. Second best option is the directors cut. The looser in this "competition" is the commercial first release to the cinemas, it cuts things too short.

410? The version I have is 292 minutes, which is just shy of five hours.

My fault, sorry. 310 I meant, but math is not my shining side...

Both series versions are almost identical as far as I know, the one was cut in 6 equally long pieces of 52 minutes, the other in 4, with the first three parts being almost twice as long each than the last one. I have no knowledge why these two cuts exist, they both were made for TV.

The last time I watched it I tried to break it up into six parts of 48 minutes each (I assume the difference in length comes from opening and closing credits in each episode). I was fine until I had to switch discs and actually had to do some counting. My math is no better than yours.

I really wish they'd release it actually divided into the episodes. Five hours is a bit long for me these days.
