Hi mate, As a suggestion and depending on what 3D software you use, you can simply paint in the 3d view directly on your model with a graphic tablet and you just install directx shader mode. This give you real time preview of your painting and the directx shader is what is use in every game engine and can display all map in viewport like diffuse, Ambient occlusion, Normal map, specular.
