Default Invulnerable Ships any way to stop it?

Hey All,

The last two ships I've encountered were both Large Modern Tankers.
Both were invulnerable.

The first, I put 4 torps into, and it didn't even bat an eye. It had a little
fire, but lost no speed, and 12 hrs later was still steaming happily before I had to abandon it.

The second, was a lone LM Tanker, and I first put 3 torps in, and it stopped
the ship. For next 6 hours, it sat there, half sunk, just lower in the water. So I put 4 more into it.. 4 hours later (game time) I put another 4 lol. In the end, I put all 24 torps into it on both sides, all along each side, and still it wouldn't sink. So I time compressed for 24 hrs, and yep, she was still there.

I couldn't surface to use the gun, as the thing was armed to the teeth with 2 deck guns and 4 x 2, and 2 x 4 20mm guns.

I've had a real bad run lately with invulnerable ships, is there any way at all to fix the problem, or sink the mongrels. And yes, all torps on both ships exploded, and all were between 2 to 10 ft above keel, high speed, Magnetic switch from 1000 yds using Dick O'Kane method.

Now I have to go back to refit yet again.

What version of game are you running and what mods? RFB? RFB uses natural sinking mechanics which makes it tough(little too tough) for it to sink, as read multiple accounts of ships going down in seconds, all depends. Those large tankers blow up real nice when they have fuel as cargo, they dont always have fuel as cargo though, when they have freight, they are tougher to sink as they are modern well built ships. I run TMO.Aim one torpedo just forward of the smokestack, one or two center mass, one forward, this creates flooding and damage in all compartments. The one under the stack should knock out the engine, cause heavy damage, can often set off a chain reaction explosion of volatile cargo such as fuel or ammon. How a ship in the game all depends on what the cargo is.

Hey,

It's version 1.4 for SH4.

Yeh that's the sort of thing I usually do. My first 3 went under fore mast,
2nd under smoke stack, and last ahead midmast. As I said, in the end I put 24 torps (full load), been 3 days now, and I just put 35 shells into it as well lol... there must be a way to stop it from happening. The last 4 days, I've had 5 ships that took between 6 to 10 torps to sink. Reinstall might be in order methinx.

Here's my mods.

Enviromental 5.0 mod
OaksHudGuages
KOLLMORGEN TELEMETER LENS 8 DGR
Historical Prop Rotation
NSM4 classic
OFFICER RANKS INSIGNIA 1.1
ParaB's fewer radio contacts
PE4_Final
SMALLER SEABED ROCKS
SMALLER SEA PLANTS MEDIUM
SubSoWesPac Air Strike Mod
WEBSTER's Better Air Patrols for v1.4 and v1.5
GreenLamp
Dark Recognitionmanual
Small Radar Contacts Stage 1
sobers better rock Ver 2 mod for ver 1.5
Aspect Ratio 16 to 9
HI RES RED FIN BALAO
SH4 Ultimate Sound Pack
Bigger Better Protractors
3000 Yard-Meter Bearing Tools (1280x960)

I would say NSM4 classic is the culprit.

You could try removing it and see what the impact is.

Yep, NSM4 is the likely problem. Also, are you sure all these mods are for V1.4? Most mods out are for 1.5. That can cause issues.Either way, I would bet NSM$ is the cuplprit.I once put 8 torpedos and 50 shells a small Taihosan Maru freighter, about 1900 tons lol and it took 3 days to sink.

Is there any reason you don't want to use v1.5?

Regardless of your sinking troubles, you would be better off with v1.5 and one of the mega-mods for the same.

ummm you cant use Env 5.0 AND PE4 at the same time, only use one and not the other so that is a big problem that will cause the game to act funny.

also as mentioned NSM has issues but its still a good mod, you just have to live with some issues not acting right if you want to use it.

Interestingly, invulnerable tankers are a historical fact. These guys were the world's greatest fireworks display when they were full, but when they were empty, think about it!

You have a double hull with the hulls quite a distance apart--a ship within a ship. It weighs nothing and floats so high you have to dangle an anchor to keep it from rising off the water.

Wait! Here come a half dozen torpedoes. They can blow the hell out of the outer hull and never put a pinprick in the inner one. There are lots of accounts of empty tankers taking six or more torpedoes and just steaming over the horizon like nothing ever happened. Drove more than one skipper to drink.

Hey RR!

The staff at ComSubPac had you listed as OVERDUE AND PRESUMED LOST. Did your boat (or, maybe your computer) run aground?

Anyway, it's good to see you're still in operation.

Thanks guys...

I'll remove that mod, and just pick one of the environmental mods. lol

As for 1.5, I'd love to use it, I have it but it won't install, so my plan was next time in port I was going to reinstall and try to install the 1.5 patch, then install either Trigger Maru or FOTRS.

Could do with some advice on which of the mega mods you guys think is the best one... what I want is harder escorts. Only once so far have I had a reallly bad day, when I was hammered for an hour. I lost my electrics, batteries n the ship was sinking. It sank all the way down to 320 ft 10ft from red zone, when the crew fixed the leaks, but we were dead in the water for hours.

After finally the escorts left n we sank some stragglers, n escaped, on the way back to refit we were bombed and again was dead in the water from diesels being knocked out, electrics were still dead and we were sinking again... but again the crew saved the day. lol Best day ever in SH4.

Still, escorts are generally pretty easy in stock.

Well I removed Natural sinking mechanics, reinstalled
and still those tankers won't sink.

I reloaded the mission 6 times. There are 2 tankers in the convoy
and I put all my torps into them both 6 times from different sides. lol

I gave up in the end n just wrote those ships off as torp wasters. lol Shame cause they come in at 10,000 ton

I cant see why other than you are running into big tankers not loaded with fuel or ammo but just freight. They are large, modern, well built tanker ships. I have learned that two factors affect a ship, crew settings(poor to elite) and what cargo they are carrying(tankers can carry internal cargo of fuel, freight, or ammunition) I am thinking you are running into tankers loaded with freight and set at vet or elite.

Also, are you losing contact then regaining contact? A bug in the game is if you damage a ship, get out of contact range for long(long enough for them to resume normal sailing, no zigging etc) the damage does not hold over, its like a new ship respawns. Example, in the south china sea near Parcell Islands in 1944 I attacked a tanker convoy I added(since game has little to no traffic in this vital singapore-japan shipping lane) and attacked, I fired six fish 2 10,000 tankers, 3 each.Three hit one ship, she exploded into a fireball, no doubt loaded with fuel coming from singapore(i make all home bound tankers have fuel as they should) but randomly they have higher and lower crew settings, supposed second target had a skilled crew because she made a hard starboard turn and two fish missed but one hit her bow, blowing it off practically, starting a major fire in the bow area.I was forced to go to 300 feet to avoid the escorts.Surfaced after 4 hours of heavy depth charging, raced ahead of the convoy, losing radar contact for an hour then regaining contact, i moved far enough out of the range convoy resumed normal sailing.I went for a night surface attack. I fired four fish from 4,000 yardS(forced to fire further due to heavy escort screen) , two hit, leaving her damaged. After I got away, I used to external cam to look over to tanker, her bow was like brand new, seen this before. So its possible youre just running into tough targets. Now, with volatile cargo like fuel, they usually go up in flames, even the big tankers with two well placed hits.

Now, if this is wrong, perhaps some mod is the culprit, did you reinstall sh 4? or just the mods? If just the mods, may need to get a clean install of SH 4.

Mind showing your updated mods list?

Are you reloading from a saved mission? Perhaps the factors that caused the tankers to not sink were also saved.
