As a kid, I used to sneak down to the TV set and watch the late night talk shows. One of the reasons I was willing to risk the wrath of my mother was to watch Jonathan's appearances; he was and probably always will remain the greatest master of pure improv in comedy history. Before him, it was all jokes and punchlines, ala Leno, just a variation on the burlesque and vaudeville acts before television. Jonathan came along and just blew away the norms of comedy. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have watched him, in his prime, perform on all those shows. There is a phrase, "standing on the shoulders of giants", used to describe how those who come after owe much to the groundwork of those who came before. Fortunately for those who appreciate and admire the comedians and improv acts of today, Johnathan Winters had some very broad shoulders, indeed...

RIP Johnathan, and thank you for brightening up the world. And give our regards to Maudie...

While Winters was funny in Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, that comedy was written by someone else. Early in his own career Robin Williams said that Jonathan Winters was his biggest inspiration, and he was ecstatic when Winters agreed to play the "son" in Mork & Mindy.

Here is a clip of some of Winters' own stand-up.
