There isn't. It has a chance of spawning and you'll get a clue when the character's heart starts beating and the smaller animals start fleeing (or at least the game's manual claims the latter, I haven't had time to observe.) As far as I know, it always spawns relatively near you, so you won't avoid it by seeing it from the distance and going the other way.

It hasn't bothered me yet, since I have only met it twice and been playing for about a week in-game time. If anything, it has been refreshing. But I can see how it would quickly become annoying if it happened more often or every time on certain spots.
