Default Jack staff

I think he's referring to the jackstaff. But, since I uninstalled SH5 while I'm sorting out the Mega-Mod package (and finishing up another patrol in SH4/OM), I can't say for sure what the deck gear arrangement is on the bow of the U-boat model(s) in SH5. If I recall, the staff is there, along with the net cutter, but there is no jack being flown from the staff (I think somebody else also had a problem with that seemingly useless "stick").

I know this won't help solve his problem, but maybe it'll point somebody in the right direction.

Yeah, probably the jackstaff. I was catching up on the bugs/glitches thread today and there's a big argument about it on page 55 or so.

Wouldn't it be fairly simple to just erase that part on the boat's texture file? It'd still be there on the 3D model, but out of sight, out of mind, and if it causes a problem when you can't see it, you've probably got bigger problems (crashing into things, perhaps).

I would think it would have been removable IRL, because having a flagpole in front of the net cutter kind of defeats the purpose of the net cutter, doesn't it? (Or at least invites a bent flagpole.)

It took awhile, but there's the "pointer"; lots of discussion in the Bugs and Glitches thread. I can't help much as far as how to "remove" it, but there seem to be a couple of potential solutions.

As for the real life matter, they were definitely removable. In most surface ships (warships, that is) the jackstaff is hinged and is simply lowered to the deck and secured with a clamp or hasp, when getting underway. For submarines they are installed in sockets when in port and removed and stowed below when underway.

There doesn't seem to be many photos of U-Boats with the jackstaff clearly shown. I don't know what the KM protocols were for installing the staff or flying the Jack, but one of the primary uses for the jackstaff in most other Navies is that it carries the forward anchor light (the all-around white light[s] that must be displayed when anchored). But, on pg 34 of "Warship Pictorial 27", it is definitely in place for the commissioning ceremony of U-431 and one is also visible in the photo on pg 18 of "Anatomy of the Ship, The Type VII U-Boat", of a Type VIIC underway. In the first mentioned photo, it appears to be installed in a deck socket, a possible opening, or cover for which, appears to be shown in Plates A4 and A10 of Westwood's book.

I was just in Chicago two weeks ago and standing on the mezzanine in the MSI practically touching the bow of U-505 (for the hundredth time or so); it doesn't have a staff installed but I'm almost positive there is a socket/cover for it just to starboard of centerline. Once upon a time, when I was young and "invincible" and the boat was still displayed outdoors, the jackstaff was there. If you knew the right people (or your cousin was a Chicago cop and knew the right people) you could still get topside and wander around. On one such "private tour", I grabbed hold of that jackstaff in order to lean out over the side and was promptly told by the "tour guide" to get my a$$ away from there and back down below!
