First of all, I'd like to say to the UK, Congratulations on fielding the new Type 45.
![]() The omni-directional missile system combined with an incredible radar resolution in the 3-D Sampson phased array radar system look to be an incredible combo. (PAAMS) It's argued that this Sampson has a better resolution than the latest SPY-1. But I'm not sure totally if that's been confirmed or not. Definitely possible. The Aster missiles they will use have active radar modes of homing. I know the US Navy has something like this planned in something called ERAM or SM-6. But that's still only in the planning stages. Type 45 incorporates this technology now. Very impressive. Plus, I'm sure every sailor in the Royal Navy will want to serve on the ship for all the amenities. its generaly seen as the start of a new era in the navy, what with the 45's and the designs being drawn up for 2 new carriers.

Not just the airforce! All over!
Sending the British army to a desert theater wearing green camo is stupid. |

I dunno. I really don't think that 20 year old planes are all that obsolete. The F-15, F-16 and F/A-18 squadrons in the world would probably agree.
Not to mention the B-52 squadrons. The B-52 was introduced in 1954...52 years ago! I mean, of course there's no contest when facing an F-22, but until they come online in greater numbers, and the F-35s are delivered, these planes should be fine, as there's nothing that they can't do that other planes in the world can.

Its not so much the aircraft. Its the amount the RAF has. We're overstretched as it is and putting an aircraft through more frame hours than it can take is not a good idea.

tornadoes are still good aircraft, but their replacements need to start coming within the next 7 years, even if its the trouble hit JSF's and eurofighters (now performing very well in tests)

I thought the Type 45 would have been more discussed on the Strategypage.com forum....

Dude, the 45 uses ASTER in active mode homing (omni-directional system - high resolution 3-D radar). You launch a missile and it needs no illumination from the ship itself to find it's mark. That frickin' rocks. I think the ASTER 30 is out to 100 Km. I love AAW type destroyers. And this one looks exceptional.
I'm not sure this ship is too well known about yet (not a lot of links out there), so it still is not being talked about as much as it should be. Sea Demon |

Type 45 Daring
Times:- Each new D class destroyer will also have more firepower than the Royal Navy’s combined fleet of eight Type 42 destroyers once she is installed. “One D class ship would be able to knock out the same number of targets as eight Type 42s because its missile system can track and attack multiple incoming aircraft and missiles,” a Navy source said. BBC:- Lt Cdr Dean Woodruff RN, who has been overseeing Daring's progress, said she was something special for the Royal Navy. More space has been allocated for recreational areas including the first purpose built fitness centre. The old-style messes accommodating 30 or 40 men have been replaced by cabins which sleep six. All ranks were asked what they would like on board Daring and 95%of their ideas have been incorporated.** http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4666906.stm (** Now that is ''Daring.'' ![]() The Launch video:- http://www.type45.com/ Description:- http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/horizon/ http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/static/pages/1973.html http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/De...sInGlasgow.htm
