It's ok, I'm pretty sure I've got all the files at home on my external drive, so I'll just have to wait a few days till I get back. Doing my 1st ever proper backup now, at 02:30, the Mrs isn't going to be happy, it's her laptop I nearly broke too

Not having much luck getting back on, trying a system restore now hoping it works....ok seems good, doing full AV check with F-secure. Sorry, but think mediafire, that file may be compromised?
Just d/l file without any problem...scanned individual file then complete system, again no problem.

I'd be checking history of usage regarding sites visited...that's all I can suggest.

I'm not familiar with mediafire, does it often ask you to type out the chatacters before allowing you to continue to press download? I've not been anywhere else apart from the usual trusted sites such as subsim, wondering if it's been a hack in mediafire? Going to try and get online and chat with my AV provider. Thanks for checking, hopefully it won't happen to anyone else

When I click on the links I've posted I'm never asked to type in any characters

@Uboatman

I can confirm what Jim says, I have no need to enter characters on mediafire either. Something sounds fishy.

Best regards.

Probably why I've never noticed then...a) they are my files and b) I tend to upload a lot more than I download.

Been a long day, sorting this out and drving up to Scotland with a toddler in the back.

So, by lunchtime I'd found out that it was what they term a Ransomware attack. And yes, I was on my third D/L within 15 mins.

It was one of those boxes to type in characters and click ok, it was odd in that there was no attempt to distort the image like there normally is with these things, but not being familiar with mediafire I entered the code and clicked ok, this pop up appeared just after the page to press D/L had loaded. Then it must have uploaded the malware to my system and a message appeared saying I was engaged in illegal activity (which we all know is BS) and I had to pay a fine to have my laptop unlocked.

The good news: I could restart and operate the system in safe mode, which allowed me to clear any files, browser cache, temp files etc, a restart at this po
point failed to unlock the system, so used safe mode to initiate recovery which worked and after a successful normal start my AV scan removed 2 infections and hopefully system is properly purged ( was still working fine earlier, phew! )

The bad news: Had a good chat with the AV helpdesk and they said reports of this type of attack are on the increase and there is nothing they can do to prevent it, the attackers are constantly upgrading the malware and the AV companies are releasing updates as fast as they can.

I'm glad I'd read about this kind of attack only a few days before so I knew it was a scam, I really feel for someone who is vulnerable and not so computer savvy.

Anyway ladies and gents, keep sharp, I'd not wish this to happen to any of you, certainly my worst experience in nearly 20 years of home computing.
