Ok I'm making one of these too, but mine is the actual box art. What are your reccomendations guys? I don't have any screenshots of SHIV... so I have no idea what kind of graphics I can expect....

Well... does anyone know what American and/or Japanese subs looked like in World War II? All I have right now to work with is black and white photographs (not good since this is box art) and SHIII, which is full of German subs.

Here's some more photos of US submarines for you. Most are in black and white, but if you look hard, you'll find many color photos too.

Used google to find this 3D Gato rendering too:

Though I'm not sure if we can use it...

Here are some good pics to edit as a base. Found them on Navsource.org

Gato (SS-280)

Gato (SS-273)

Oil painting (of Gato) by Tom Freeman entitled "The Harder (SS-257) Rescues Ensign John Gavlin"

If you search some more, there are plenty of reference pictures to play with.

lol, look at this, I recolorized a photo :P

Pretty nifty huh?

But in the end, I don't think that I should use colorized WWII photos for my box art... it doesn't really fit in

Use some of the editing filters...

Use some imagination...

Use some creativity...

Use some ingenuity...

Use some artistic license...

All in all, have some fun! :P

Ok heres my first release version. It is pretty "dirty" (lots of random pixels serving no purpose) so I'll see if I can fix it up later. Its 2:30 in the morning lol so I have to go....

btw, Im a real newbie to Photoshop, so please don't critisize to much

Wow! I think that's awesome.

That would certainly qualify as a "digital sketch." Ain't no shame in that...

lol, thanks for the praise, but I think it looks too much like the SHIII cover with a random image pasted ontop :P

Maybe I should diminish the filter effect on the image and make it a tad lighter for starters...

Ok, I've made a new version of my box art, but I still haven't found the time to go through and remove the ugly pixels... but I did spend another two hours on it, mainly adding the Japanese Rising Sun

This project is really consuming my free time, doing stuff with Paint is annoyingly slow. Photoshop is so advanced, sometimes I can't find the basic functions

EDIT: Image tags snipped, vastly improved version below.

Here's my cover (and my first post too).

I've attached the images I used to make the composite, for those of you that are interested in that sort of thing. The sub is the USS Torsk, the last American naval vessel to sink a warship in WW2.

The smoke looks a little streched, also think a bit about camera focus. Apart from that, very good
