When I was a kid it was not unusual for homes in the neighborhood to have a large antenna on the house or set up in the yard. I do not see them much anymore.

You should really tell more.

I always thought ham radio was something you built from kits and just went broadcasting. Didn't know you need a licence inland ???

I'm contemplating instaling a CB station in my car

I think a CB does not require a license.
