It's funny... I got into the whole Silent Hunter scene with SH5 and when i played it for the first time i was so amazed. Then i gave SH4 a try and thought it was even better (even if the graphics looked kind of old) so now i'm considering trying SH3.
Question is: Should I? Is SH3 considered better then SH4 in the gameplay aspect? Its not really a question of money (it's dirt cheap, these days) its more about getting to learn a new game and looking into mods and whatnot.

SH3 has had the advantage of years of dedicated modding, with several major supermods and hundreds of smaller mods to choose from.
This thread should give you some idea of what's available for SH3: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=170090

That is impressive, Steve. But if i do decide to play it, it would be without mods at first so i can learn the game (also makes you appreciate mods even more afterwards.)
What advantages (if any) does SH3 bring over SH4? Or rather... What would you say SH3 does better then SH4?

With SH3 you have to rotate the crew yourself when they get tired, or use SH3 Commander's controller to turn fatigue off altogether. SH4 also puts the clipboard in front of you when you get a message. SH3 takes you to a radio room screen. What SH3 does have is a certain feel to it. I can't explain it, but a lot of players have commented on it. It just feels 'right'. As Red October said, the big difference is in the mods. When I sink a merchant it gets a name and cargo listing, plus the number of crew aboard and how many died. For the U-boat side, SH3 has realistic port mods, with working locks in the harbors and canals. GWX offers a world of interesting oddities (American convoys escorted by blimps) and good AI routines. The MFM offers more than 70 different new merchant types, and there are other ship mods adding liners, and new ones adding many more destroyers. The list goes on forever. The GWX team was working on an SH4 version, but it died when SH5 was announced. If it had been finished I suspect SH3 would be history for me. Basically SH4 is an advancement over SH3, and if it had the same attention from the modders I would play nothing else. But it doesn't, and it's those mods that keep SH3 at the top of my list. If you don't care about the mods and what they bring to the table, stick with SH4. Operation Monsun gives an excellent u-boat campaign, it just lacks all those little details.

No.
first of all, you were amazed by SHV the first time you played it. That gives a clue as to where you come from: not from the subsimming world, rather than the eyecandy world (IMNSHO the only theing SHV has to offer) Then you were trying SHIV, and kind of let down by the dated graphics. (confirming your roots?) SHIII will... SHIII will disgust you. its old, and ugly too. no transparent water, no eyecandy whatsoever in comparisaition to SHV. one needs to get into it , learn a bit about its ins and outs, add a mod package to make it really into the BIG thing it is. So you will not be amazed the first time you play it. You will be disgusted the first time you play it. Someone amazed with SHV graphics will have a hell of a hard time getting SHIII to a satisfactory level. It takes time and a lot of reading. And people amazed by graphics are not the most patient people that are willing to dig deep. Now go and prove me wrong... XD

Wow... You couldn't possibly had got me more wrong!
I was amazed by SH5 because i wasn't even aware there were WWII sub simulators on the market. I played it for about a month and found out about SH4 which i loved even more! I thought the gameplay was so much better so i ditched SH5 (even if it does have better graphics.) Sure i like nice graphics as much as anyone else but between good graphics and good gameplay, gameplay is much more important to me. Its the reason i was never able to get back into SH5. Before i even asked on here i was watching some Let's Play videos on youtube and it looked very interesting to me. It certainly did not "disgust" me. Thanks for the reply, Steve. Exactly the type of answer i was looking for. But unfortunately it doesn't seem to be what i am looking for. I might give OM a try instead.

To answer to the Thread-title:
Of course you should, what a question! I tried SH4 but somehow it wont run without lags...checked and worked on grahic settings...used 4 gig patch...gave e´m all cpu´s...the same. At v1.00 it runs good. Im scared of SH5...but im gonna try it the next weeks. So SHIII is the true with the best mods and gameplay you can trust in. ![]() |

![]() ![]() From the right point of view you are absolutely correct! On the other hand if we're strictly talking about gameplay Aces Of The Deep still has a lot to recommend it. ![]()
