Darn practice is making perfect!

If only they'd fill their escorts with raw recruits, happy times three!

One I loaded IRAI, the destroyer escorts seemed to get a little bit ticked off about a U-Boat making them look bad. I sink one ship and "here they come". Fast dive and wait patiently until they are searching another sector. Come back up and Fire again and "here they come"!! This time they're not so quick to leave the area!

Gute Jagd!
With IRAI you really have to start forming wolf packs when ever possible . This means radioing in a convoy and hope for a message saying there are subs near and a wolfpack is heading your way . You have to shadow a convoy for days sometimes until the other subs turn up . If no wolfpack then you have to decide is it worth attacking the convoy . Makes the game damn hard .

Hey Sober
To tell you the truth, I have blown it off more than once. If there were more than three escorts and the convoy was real small I might fire and dive without checking or just take off.
The wolfpack patch really does work! I increased the message reply probability from BDU to 50% so there would be more chances to get a wolfpack reply if I sent a contact report. So, I get more replies either telling me to go it alone or they're sending help.
That's another thing, attacking a convoy in shallow water, 75m under keel and under is asking for the keys to Davey Jones locker. One thing that was confirmed in several different ways is, like SH4, the thermal layers in SH5 do exist. The deeper I can go (obviously) the harder they have to work to find me, but if I'm in shallow water or come up to "take a look" too soon, they all start charging to my location before I even get to 20 or 30m. Then I have to dive right back down and wait till they "lose" me again, if I have the depth.
Whoa! What a game.... It really is getting good isn't it??

What about the destroyer that sits silent waiting for you to pop your periscope up .

Fire off a quick salvo from distance and then it'll be bloody hell!

Haven't run into that one yet. I was hoping the game would do that, as it would be realistic. Although, I have had one destroyer sit "Listening or Pinging" while the other DD's make Depth Charge runs. I think the Pinging is creepier n' hell. It reminds me of immenent death.

Yes, and there is a mission to hit one of these battleships in the norway campaign. You have to sit ahead silently and hope the convoy doesn't zig, then fire at the Battleship hoping you hit the dang thing with enough TNT to sink it, then you can't wait around to find out. If your not already on your way down deep, they'll find you. And I can't forget to Course Change after I fire as well, so I don't end up in the middle of the party...

I did this today.

I got back home off of CVN 65 (which is the Enterprise, god rest her soul) actually the other day. Ironically I decided to head in and play a bit of SH5, I was ****ing amazed at what I ran into. I started all over and had the ****ty boat, I was looking around for convoys and other ships that happened to make the sad mistake of crossing into me.

Here's the ironic part, I work aboard a carrier and moments later after looking for merchant vessels I noticed this weird circular formation of warships. I had a good feeling I knew what this was and so I zeroed in on it. Unfortunately they were doing 15 knots and underwater I could only do about 8, surfaced around 16 to 17 given the choppy weather. So I was very slowly gaining on them, I took an approach from the back (due to lack of options) and did my best to sneak up on these warships and the carrier, I winded up going parascope depth only to find out I had already fired off all of my torpedoes. So, I surfaced and started firing my deckgun at about 6 warships and the carrier. This was a suicide mission, but I still managed to take out the carrier! With a smile on my face at the end! I saved it beforehand so what winded up happening in the end was me watching it sail over the horizon as I went in the opposing direction with a frown on my face. Either way, there you go, was a lot of fun.

I have not yet taken out a convoy but the convoy has taken me out! I'm finding the mod'ed game so much better than sh5 base game. Special thanks to Sober and his mod guide as well as all mod contributors. UBI should be writtting each of you checks.

Yes, and don't forget those patches, it's nice to have real Dud torpedoes that go off halfway to the target and watchmen and a soundguy that actually call out contacts, and let's not forget all the mods that make the merchant ships act like real ships. Thanks to all the Modders 'cause when I come across a convoy now, or when my watch crew spots aircraft....my heart starts triphammering...no joke.
In my mind, I've got a responsibility to keep the ship safe plus sink tonnage. Sure it's just a game...tell my triphammering heart that!

The only time I've ever taken out entire convoys in SH 3, 4 or 5 was in unmodded. Seriously, that stock AI is terrible.

Absolutely, and it's often a fine line between aggressive tonnage and getting your crew home in one piece. I play the same way, (pushing the envelope as hard as I can), while still honoring my responsibility to my crew. As you say, it makes for some interesting (and heart pounding) dilemmas.

Interesting to read this as a complete noob to SH5 and subsims and from my very limited experience I can't see how anyone could sink 9-12 ships.

I am playing stock and I am on my 3rd patrol. It took me 2 patrols to get the 50,000 tonnage to complete the Coastal Waters mission. On the 2nd patrol I found an unescorted convoy and sank 6 or 7 ships. This took all my torps and deck gun ammo.

On my current patrol in the Western Approaches I am in the middle of attacking an escorted convoy. I put 1 torp into one ship and 2 into another and they are both still steaming at full speed despite having huge holes, flooding and being on fire. I then repositioned and sank another ship which took 3 torps. I now have to get back to the front of the convoy and see if I can hit the first 2 ships with enough torps to sink them. As there are at least 6 warships I assume that it will be suicide to try and use my deck gun.

As it seems to take 3 torps per small freighter, how do people manage to sink 9 or 12 ships with one load of torps? Especially as I assume most people on this thread are using modded installs and playing at a much harder realism setting than I am.

I would recommend the Seawolf Torpedo tweak, it gives your topedoes more bang, most ships will go down even with one torpedo.

Using the 'Falke' with this mod is laughable.
Sinking a slow moving cruiser or carrier with this mod is much easier.
Ships seem to sink a lot more with this mod, the ship usually sinks before it explodes, that's quite a nice bonus.
Even sinking tankers or other large freighters is now much easier.
Sinking a convoy with the falke's is very easy, just fire them in random directions
Under most circumstances the torpedo will find it's own target.
