I have to say this is one of the best games of the year. Definitely the best shooter of the year.
Even on the PS3 version the graphics look superb(although funnily enough pre-rendered cutscenes look bad compared to the in-game stuff(Absolution is the same way). I've put in a good 12 hours and still have a lot left to unlock and do. I spend more time hunting or taking over Pirate camps than I do actually playing the story. Although, that's not the say the story isn't good, It's actually fairly interesting and worth going through. My only two complaints are The upgrade system -You can't upgrade the "bottom" tier weapons. Despite the fact that they would be upgradable in real life. These include the AK-47 and 1911 knock offs. The AK47 has a weapon slide, yet you can't put anything on it. Almost every gun offers a "upgraded" magazine size, except for the bottom tier weapons. Also when you do upgrade a weapons magazine, it doesn't show up on the actual gun(yet the scopes and silencers do). Finally most guns are locked at 2 upgrades, so while you can have a larger magazine, your choice between two different scopes, and a silencer, you have to choose 2 out of the 3. Bit silly that you can't have a silencer, scope, and larger magazine. The Health system- The healing animations are a bit slim. In some cases your character will bandage something he just bandaged a second ago(and the bandage will be missing). Although on the more serious injuries you get gory "heal" scenes, like in Far Cry 2. Another small problem is that the AI drivers are kind of horrible, but that's not uncommon for open world games, and doesn't really detract from the gameplay. As the game is somewhere in the Pacific, you could just make a joke about Asian drivers. Not too many games let you go hunting with grenades, or accidentally set a field on fire because you launched a grenade launcher at a group of enemies. The AI also seems to be pretty good. They fire at your last known position, and if you're sniping with a silenced rifle, they'll investigate where they think the shot came from without magically knowing where you are. It's quite easy to disappear into the bushes like a silent predator. You also get extra points for stealth approaches on the Camps, which is a nice thing.

The guys with the tataus are the good guys. The bad guys just look like pirates.

I have it on the PS3, but I figure if the consoles can handle it, most mid range computers can too.

Any tips on how to save in this game? I keep saving while exploring, but every time I load a save, I end up not where I left the game, but at the previous point in the story, which often forces me to sit through a cutscene or dialogue yet again.
After liberating the first enemy outpost, I ignored game's repeated commands to talk to Dr. Earnhardt and instead went exploring, thinking that this was a actually an open-world game, and I could do what I want. When I would load those saves, though, I would start right back at the outpost. So I finally gave in, found the doctor, and completed the quest he gave me. I then patiently listened to the phone call re: the Medusa, and set off again to explore. I saved, loaded, and was right back at the house, and had to listen to the phone call yet again. Please tell me this is just because I'm only 1-2 hours into the game, and it feels that the excessive player aids aren't enough - I need to be shown exactly where to go, too - but that it will finally quit this crap after a while. Because right now, this open world means absolutely nothing if I can't save my location and status in it. ![]() |
