current version of SH5 to buy

Hi all,
a very simple question :
I refused to buy SH5 as long as the DRM and being online constantly was a necessity.
I know now that the DRM system has been relaxed "somewhat".
Noting that there are plenty of good Mods available I am willing to give SH5 a try (I very much enjoyed SH3).
I have read that it was better no to buy the Steam version and that Amazon was an acceptable choice.
However there are several packages available on European Amazon (France) and I wouldn't like to buy an old buggy one.
I noticed a KOL 2011 version, a SH5 2010 version, a Just for Games 2012 version and a collector version (with a stupid pricing of 50 Euros).
Could you help me in my choice ?

Thanks in advance.

- DON'T buy the Steam version, due to the limitations you already know.

- Most subsim members agree that Collector's Edition is very expensive compared to its modest extra-features.

- If you can't wait, any non-steam version available for download should be okay.

- My personal preference would go to any retail version on hard support. You can get the game for as cheap as 5-10 USD, shipping included.

- Last: if you decide to buy the game from Amazon, do it by clicking on the link at the upper right corner of this forum: Subsim will get a little commission from your purchase with no extra fees for you

the main reason for it is that you cannot apply TDW's .exe Patcher to the Steam version.

And TDW's .exe patcher fixes WAY TOO MANY CRITICAL THINGS not to be included in your mod list.

Hi antidotos, if it helps you make your choice, I've just bought the Just For Gamers version on Amazon France and have had no issues until now.
Game patched and running...

Whilst this seems expensive to the PC Gamers of today, it should be noted that in the UK at least the original Silent Hunter actually cost £50 (more than 50 Euros)at release and that was in 1996 16 years ago! Which probably goes some way to explaining why virtually no-one is making simulation games anymore.

A bit off topic.... so please forgive me.

B-17 Flying Fortress "The Mighty 8th" by MicroProse was $45.99 USD back in 1999. I believe it was one of the most expensive WWII PC simulations at that time. It was also the very first simulation I bought for my very first computer that ran Windows ME.

A real shame that. Sometimes I feel like the last member of a dying breed, then I come to subsim and I'm reminded I'm in good company. Just not enough of us I guess.

Hi guys , I'm kinda new to all of this, last SH game I played was Silent Hunter II, which is kind of a long time ago. I really want to buy SH5, and I've read that Steam is not the way to go.

How about buying it through Uplay? Does anyone have any knowledge of that?
Buying a boxed copy will not be easy for me.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I thought it suited the topic

Regards
Alexander

edit: What gap wrote: - If you can't wait, any non-steam version available for download should be okay.
That kind of gave me the answer. Thanks!

Why is that? Location? Personally I try to stay away from downloads, but I admit that's just me. Depending on where you're at there are options for buying the disc, and there are members who are willing to help out if we can.
