Nah, that was one of our missile boats. HMS Vanguard.

Astute has had lots of problems with her though, and if I were in the Andy I'd come to the same conclusion that she's a marked boat. A shame really, a friend of mine has a son on board her, although IIRC when I spoke to her last, she said she'd heard from him, she was expecting him to be at sea but Astute was back at dock because "they'd broken the boat" so, there is that.

Hopefully Ambush will be a bit more fortunate. I guess the whole debacle with the designing and construction of Astute didn't help her much. In theory though, the Astute class is quite capable, and once the initial problems are ironed out I'm sure they'll do sterling service.

I don'T give a penny for "marked" boats, that is superstition, imo. What lies at the base of probloems is not accidents and mishaps, but design issues and choice of materials and components. For example the reactor model chosen - that has nothing to do with a boat being "marked". It is to be expcetd that for example HMS ambush also will suffer from maximum speed restrictions - it uses the same reactor model. And ill_chosen components in one boat that corrode early on, willk corrode early on in another boat as well if they get attached to the boat in the same spot, under same conditions.

The issues are not fate or mishaps or unlucky events, but some design flaws, it seems to me.

You may be right but sailors have always been a superstitious breed.

Never wear green on a Friday. That's what the wife's grandfather used to say from his time on trawlers, and right to the end he never would.

Hopefully Ambush and the followers will be more lucky (or designed and built and operated better) than Astute.

So it's "spooky" versus "Spocky".

Correct me if I'm wrong but I understood from article that problem is not reactor itself (which is more powerful than one used on Trafalgars) but turbine sets used to harness its power (which are of obsolete technology).

EDIT: Missed part describing "bulbous" appearance because of reactor design chosen. Sounds like compromise in hydrodynamics which is propably not good thing.
