The air/sea rescue is a very dangerous job indeed especially so up in Alaska.

In the U.S. Coast Guard the guys that jump out from the choppers are called rescue swimmers and the training is very tough to pass and the the pilots of those choppers are just incredible to simply hover a chopper in ideal conditions is hard enough now just imagine having to contend with seas with 50 foot and higher waves a hairy job indeed. Many people like to make fun of the Coast Guard but they save alot of lives every year.

In some regions of the US Air Force Para-rescue does the same job with the same risks if you have ever read the book or seen the movie "The Perfect Storm"
the USAF lost an entire MH-60 and its crew in that storm they had nearly run out of fuel but they did not give up searching. It takes real balls to risk your own life just to save someone
when the conditions put your own life a great risk.
