I guess "a lot more" isn't quite right, since it never crashed before. I've been getting crashes on my server after setting it up with the 1.4 prerelease.

From the crash report "Descripion: Exception in server tick loopjava.lang.OutofMemoryError: Java heap space"

I'm getting this placing redstone lamps, never had a problem with them before.
It might be that I'm running the server on a 32 bit copy of Windows 7? This is just an acer laptop after all. I set it up so a few friends and I could work on a large project in creative, haven't had any problems running it almost continuously since June.

1.4 pushed to 25th, 1.4.1 pre-release today instead:
http://mojang.com/2012/10/minecraft-1-4-1-pre-release/

Quote:
day -1 patch! Lovely! No but seriously, there was a big issue
causing mobs to suffocate and fall through wooden floors that we really
needed to fix. The full list of fixes are…
  • Fixed mobs glitching through wooden floors
  • Fixed players glitching through Beacons
  • Fixed Redstone Repeaters getting stuck in ‘on’ state
  • Bats spawn less frequently
  • A number of minor font fixes
  • Activated the Wither painting
  • Fixed wet wolves looking way too scary
  • Tweaked naming costs in the Anvil
  • Tweaked enchantment points reward for smelting
  • Fixed bug that allowed any item to be placed in the armor slots
  • Fixed mob spawners spawning too quickly
Since we do these pre-releases mainly to prepare modders and server
admins (and not to find and fix bugs), we’ve decided to push the release of
1.4(.1) one day to Thursday, October 25. Again, since I know this is a lot
of text to read:
  • Release date: Thursday October 25
Download the pre-release here:

Right. So tomorrow then.

Nope. Did take half a day for it to make the calculations. They really need to make it use multiple cores.

Ah I see. May well be the release itself; it's a pre-release after all. Never use the things so I can't say much about stability in the past.

This brings up an interesting question - I have an 8 core server running - does Minecraft only use one core regardless?

Last I've heard they split off chunk saving, so it's kinda multi-threaded. Not sure how much progress they made towards threading the thing the past 6 months, nothing else I'm aware off. Some of the mod frameworks (Bukkit and such) implemented some of their own tweaks to improve multi-core performance.

When Obe nuked the map though 1 core was sitting maxed out with the others not doing much at all, so at least at that point there wasn't much support to speak of.

@Taledin 1.4.2. Pre-Release went live some hours ago, fixing a severe server side memory leak.

Ah, thanks for that. I was just going to use it as is until the patch but now I don't have to!

1.4.2. Released!

Code:
The Pretty Scary Update!

+ Added a beacon
+ Added flower pots
+ Added item frames
+ Added anvils
+ Added cobblestone walls
+ Added pumpkin pies
+ Added carrots and potatoes
+ Carrots can be put on a stick to control pigs while riding
+ Added a boss mob
+ Added a new skeleton type
+ Added witches
+ Added bats
+ Added mob heads that can be placed
+ Zombies now infect villagers, but can also be cured
+ Added wooden button
+ Items can be cloned with the “pick block” action in Creative Mode
+ Items can be quickly moved to the hotbar by pressing 1 through 9 while hovering an item
+ Added /difficulty, /spawnpoint, /weather, /gamerule and /clear commands
+ Added “target selectors” for commands
+ Added option to hide capes
+ Added option to toggle vertical synch
+ Added customization to superflat worlds
+ Minor additions to the world generator
+ New potion recipes
+ Leather armor can be dyed
* Maps now start more zoomed in, and can be extended
* Redstone repeaters can now be set into a “locked” position
* New sound effects
* Portals to the Nether can now transport items and mobs
* Adventure mode now allows placing and removing blocks, but only when using the correct tools
* Changed method of placing sideways wood logs
* Improved server list
* Improved debug (F3) options
* Spawn protection is now automatically disabled if there are no defined admins
- Removed Herobrine
And few things for those who haven't been keeping up with the changes:

Maps have changed so that they now have different zoom levels, to make a bigger
map place the map in the center of the crafting grid and surround it with paper. Maps work with item frames.

Books are now made by placing a piece of leather to the corner of a crafting
grid and surround it with 3 paper.

Max enchanting level is 30, so you only need one layer of books around the
enchanting table instead of two.

F3+H enables/disables debug stuff. When enabled, if you hover over a tool,
it tells you how much durability it has left. For maps, it tells the current zoom level.

Login servers are down... That explains why putting on my MC shirt and the music didn't resolve the issue.
