I'm just the opposite, which is why I still have the 18-year-old Aces Of The Deep on my computer. It has extremely dated graphics, terrible sound, no ship types and no crew, but it still has the best AI routines ever made for a submarine game. As you say, everyone gets to play the way they want to. My problem is that I'm not a gamer. I'm a historian by nature, and I play with subjects that interest me. I like the ships, and I'm just as happy playing a tabletop miniatures game with my friends, as long as it represents real ships acting in a real manner.
When SH5 lets me run a historical campaign in the u-boat of my choice, SH3 will still be on my computer.

This is just out of date spamming if you have not tried the mods on a PC that can run the game
