Conservatives Win Canadian Election

It is now almost definate that the Conservative Party of Canada will replace the Liberal Party of Canada and will form a minority government. The NDP (left-wing) have also gained so far, and the separatist Bloq Quebecois have lost four seats. One independent is leading at the time of this post, and the Green Party are currently failing miserably.

All polls are closed in Canada, so it is now alright to report this. The results are not final and may change though - it is most likely that the Conservatives will win more seats in the western provinces.

CBC's website is down right now, so I can't check for more updates.

BTW - Some of the results on CBC's website are screwed up - my parents are watching the election at home (I am in university) and the results on TV are very different. The website has been wrong most of the night for some reason (and hasn't been working at all most of the time).

EDIT: If you view the right section, you can see the right results. Not that anyone's really interested anyway. This is Canada I'm talking about after all.

I'm watching, I'm watching. It's turning out as expected, I think. My main relief is that the Bloc seems to have slipped a bit here. This perspective might be understandable, considering I live in Quebec but make my living and study in Ontario (and spend most of my time there, at that)...

I'll let people guess who I voted for. :hmm:

Yes, I too am glad to see the Bloc drop (not that I am anti-Quebec or anything - I would just like to see the province remain in Canada). I wasn't expecting that though, although the Tories, Grits, and NDP and performed exactly as I expected.

I am also glad to see the Green Party fail - all of their promises and platforms appeared unrealistic to me. Taxing take-out food, taxing already-through-the-roof gasoline, taxing natural resource development - who did they expect to vote for them anyway?

The final results have been decided now, and that is the final way the seat count turned out - no further changes. I was hoping the Bloc would have lost at least one of those two undecided ridings in which they were leading though.

Don't confuse Canada's Liberals with American liberals :hmm:

Canada's Liberal party is, in general terms, just a millimeter right of centre. The only substantial "left" in Canada is the NDP (New Democrats), which are just a millimeter left of centre.

Conservatives, relatively speaking, are the "right" - although ironically, both the major parties (Liberal/Conservative) in Canada are way the heck left on the spectrum of even the Democrats in the US. Or rather, American politics are way the heck to the right of Canada and Europe. Which is why I generally can't stand them :P

Even if I don't like any of the major parties here, I'm glad that things are keeping relatively centred here. And I'm only too glad it's a Conservative minority, which will likely let them work while severely dampening any further-right-wing tendencies.

I'm just glad that the Conservatives won, but saddened that they only enough votes to make a minority government.

I was watching CBC for 4 hours last night watching the latest results swing either side of the chart, and waiting in anticipation for the Conservative victory.

I am also glad that the Green Party didn't even get one single MP elected. I believe it’s around what, 5% of the popular vote to receive national funding? Because they got 4.6% :rotfl: (EDIT: I'm not to sure about this. Any Canadian would like to elaborate on national funding?)

But one thing I am annoyed is that Belinda Stronach got re-elected to the house. Like seriously, IMO, she changed from Conservative to Liberal just to have more power. At least she's now back where she was in the first place, as part of the opposition. It will be a laugh to see her joining the Conservatives again :P .

Finally for 13 years, the Liberals are out and the Conservatives back in. I just hope they can start the two-tier system working as soon as possible. My poor Grandma had to wait 2 years in line and then when she finally got the operation done, they sent her home and didn't care about her . The hospitals here in Canada are crap. Sure we probably have good doctors, but when the operations are done, they have to get rid of the patents to make room for new ones. This is wrong. Getting private clinics will certainly reduce the waiting time to get an operation and free up beds.

Well, I just hope that the Conservatives won't touch the Gay Marriage Act right away, because of the total outcry that would happen, which could bring another Notwithstanding clause to bring down the Government again. I am still afraid that when the next election comes around next time, the Liberal party will probably win. As I heard from CBC and my Socials teacher, the people only voted in the Conservatives because they were angry with the Liberals. I just hope the Conservatives will win a majority government next election.

I know a bit about the Canadian health care system and I agree, it is crap. THey kick you out ASAP, even if its an unhealthy thing too.

The flip side is huge Health Care insurance like we have here in the states that the poor cannot afford, and even employers are shifting that cost on over to employees now. One of my co-workers pays over $600 a month for himself and his wife and child, and this is after the employers contribution.

I am not sure what system is better, but both stink. I guess the only real thing is that if I get hurt, I know I will have better care, but don't think I am 'not' paying out of pocket for it, because it costs us dearly.
