Just bought DW!

This was highly recommended, so I picked it up and am installing it as we speak. Other than 1.04 patch, is there any other download I just GOTTA have? My CD must be the bargain CD, it came with no manual or maps.

Have you played any modern submarine sim before (Subcommand, or Jane's 688i or even Microprose Red Storm Rising )? I think this is helpful in DW to be familiar about sub warfare from those past titles. If not, steep learning curve ahead of you, I have recently re_started DW from MH60R helicopter and learned functions and tactics of sonobuys.

WALKTHROUGH
==============
1) The mission starts with the player (you) commanding a Russian Kilo
Improved diesel submarine near the Kuril Islands. Your mission is to
find a cargo ship carrying supplies to an occupying force on the island.
This cargo ship is accompanied by other neutral shipping and a U.S. frigate,
but these targets are NOT to be destroyed - only the cargo ship. This
mission will utilize many of the submarine's sensors needed to detect
and classify unknown contacts. Once the cargo ship is identified we
will destroy it accordingly.

2) After a brief 3D introduction to the Kilo Improved submarine and
a quick review of the mission objectives in the Nav Map station (F5),
we find ourselves in the Active Intercept station (Sonar suite: F2). This Sonar
display is used to detect Active pings that are being transmitted in our vicinity.
It is a passive sensor, so using it will not reveal our position. We quickly see
that there are platforms pinging to the southwest (bearings 210-230) and we mark
those bearings in the display to create sensor contacts.

3) Next we enter the Sonar Broadband station (Sonar suite: F2) to see if those
same platforms are emitting enough noise with their propellors to be detected.
Along those same bearings we create contacts S03, S04, S05 and S06. The chances
are good that these are the surface platforms we are looking for.

4) Next is to classify these contacts. The easiest means for classification is
visually, so we raise the Periscope (F8) and take a peek. We quickly identify a
neutral "Freighter" and then just past it we see the "Cargo Ship" that we
are tasked to destroy. As we continue to scroll to the left, we see the U.S.
frigate in the distance. Apparently they thought we would be intercepting
the surface group from the south... They were wrong. We are not concerned with
the frigate, however, and set our sights on the "Cargo Ship".

5) Just to be sure, we travel to the ESM station (F4) which passively detects
any Radar transmissions. Just as we would suspect, the Cargo Ship, U.S.
frigate, and Freighter are all utilizing their radars. The radar emitters
are shown in the text area labelled "Source". This gives us a second
reference for classification. Since all doubt has been eliminated, we're
just about ready to engage the target.

6) Returning to the NAV Map station (F5), we cycle through the contacts and
see all three platforms were properly classified by the ESM. We select
the "Cargo Ship", we designate it as a "Hostile Surface" and mark it as HIGH
confidence - for our own reference. We lower all masts and antennas as
we will be submerging and will prepare to fire a torpedo on our target.

7) In the Fire Control suite (F6) we select the Cargo Ship "contact: E01" and
assign it to tube 2 which currently holds a USET-80 torpedo. We quickly peruse
the weapon presets and see that the default settings should suffice. We
enter the Launch Panel screen within the Fire Control suite (F6) and proceed to
Flood and Equalize the torpedo tube. Last we open the outer muzzle doors and
FIRE the weapon.

8) With a solid target solution, our torpedo acquired the target perfectly
and we watch as it strikes the Cargo Ship in the hull on the port side.
As the cargo ship sinks to the bottom of the shallow waters, the Kilo exits
quietly, never once heard by the enemy. Well, except for her torpedo that is.

1) The mission starts with the player (you) piloting the MH-60R
helicopter in the Tsushima Strait. Your mission is to detect, classify,
and destroy a Victor-III class nuclear submarine travelling towards
your position to the southwest. The mission brief states to avoid any
unnecessary attacks against neutral shipping. Once the neutral merchant(s)
are identified the Victor-III can be found more easily and destroyed.

2) We find ourselves on the NAV Map station (F5). From the Orders menu on the
bottom of the screen we stream the MH-60R dipping sonar hydrophone. It is
important to maintain a low speed or the dipping sonar may be sheared off and
lost for the remainder of the mission. Also, a low speed ensures that the
hydrophone can operate with little interference from the ocean water moving
past the sensor.

3) In the dipping sonar station (F7), we find the first contact at a bearing of
047 which appears to be a neutral merchant, the "Freighter". We MARK the contact
which is then designated 1002. As we continue to scan we find a faint contact
at a bearing of 066 which we cannot classify definitively but we can MARK it. This
contact is designated "1003".

4) We return to the NAV Map station (F5) to quickly view the contacts we've
created and review the mission objectives one last time. So as not to lose it, we
retrieve the Dipping Sonar hydrophone from the Orders menu and proceed in the
direction of the unknown contact just to the east of the Freighter.

5) Taking a course just to the west of the line of bearing to this unknown
contact, we will drop three buoys to attempt to triangulate the location
of the contact. If the buoys are close enough, we may have enough data
to classify the contact as the hostile Victor-III we are looking for.

6) We drop the three buoys, and they report that they will be transmitting on
channels 5, 6 and 7, respectively. All three buoys are "hot" as designated by
the red dot in the center of their NTDS symbol. That means they've detected
something and we should investigate.

7) We can now enter the Acoustic station (F3) to dial in the GRAM displays
to channels 5, 6, and 7 and process the sonar data to MARK the contacts. By
selecting the GRAM CONTROL buttons, we can "dial in" GRAM I, II, and III to
channels 5, 6, and 7. We will need GRAM IV as a spare for when we need change
the MODE of the other three buoys.

8) Now that the buoys are tuned, we can start looking for the Victor-III.
By selecting the MODE key, we change the first buoy from OMNI to DIRECTIONAL
mode and we see two contacts displayed horizontally. We utilize the LIBRARY
function to match up the frequency lines with a database of known signatures
and will help us to classify these contacts. One contact is clearly the
"Freighter" and is at bearing 270. The second contact appears to be the
Victor-III and is at a bearing of 085. We MARK this contact.

9) We repeat this process on the buoys in GRAM II and III (channels 6 and 7).
The contacts found on the buoy transmitting on channel 6 are also strong and
show the "Freighter" and "Victor-III" at bearings of 270 and 180. The contact
on the buoy transmitting on channel 7 is reasonably strong for the "Freighter"
at 265, but the contact at 210 is not strong enough to clearly classify it as
the "Victor-III". However, we know from the other two buoys that this is the
Victor-III and we can MARK the contact accordingly.

10) As we return to the NAV Map station (F5) we see a clear cross-section of
where the Victor-III is located. We can create a "Manual Solution" in this
location and classify that solution as a "Hostile Submarine". We right-click
this contact and engage it with a MK50 torpedo.

11) Hooked to the torpedo we watch as it travels in on the location of the
Victor-III and detonates... Another successful kill for one of the most feared
anti-submarine platforms in the world, the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter.

This is the manual that explains how to do things, but does not provide strategy or tactics to use. The platforms are complex enough that it is a useful book to have.

The best place to get the tactical info from is the subguru.com site mentioned earlier. There are a number of white papers and a very good sub training mission/briefing for you to try.

Just started myself as a total Navy Sub newbie. I was looking for a really good strategy game because i have never done anything like that before. The modern games now are just non-cerebral and demand your attention for about 10 minutes. I wanted something i could get my teeth into. I am a flight simmer so no problem with patience and a big manual. This fits the bill. I got my first sub kill tonight on the MH-60 as recommended by so many here to start with.

So much to learn but that's kind of the point for me i am loving it. A new passion ignited.
