Gettysburg Mate.

Although fought from July 1st through 3rd?
Most people in the U.S.A. remember it better and are amazed it had nothing to do with July 4th other then retreat and aftermath.

Battle of Vicksburg
Quote:
On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.

And here I was thinking today was about the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Color me stupid.

Anyway, thanks for the continued kind wishes from you non-Yanks.

I can't seem to find that color in the forum palette. Will Chartreuse do?

It's 12 am and it still sounds like a war zone here.

Happy Declaration of Independence Day to our Southern Neighbour.

Found out a few years back that I am one of the many descendants of John Charles Carroll of Carollton, one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, representing the State of Virginia (my father's mother was a Carroll), so I guess I am at least part American...

You are correct on the dates:

July 1 North end of the battlefield
July 2 Lil Round Top, Culp's Hill
July 3 Pickett's Charge

Both armies, exhausted, held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew.

No battles were fought on the 4th at Gettysburg, maybe a few rifle exchages but nothing worth note. Vicksburg fell which Lee had no knowledge of until days later.
Union forces may have been broken had an attack been possible by Lee on the 4th.

It's all speculation now days.
