A fantasy based upon the need that everything has a higher purpose. If they can't find a higher purpose, they make one up. Cause, the idea of dealing with the raw reality of it is too much to bear or accept.

I thought Ol' man cheney personally planted the charges, after W put them in the wrong buildings.

Obviously, the plan was to get rid of Rumsfeld, but even the third try (Powell's turn)
failed, placing the charges to the exact opposite side of the Pentagon
from Rumsfeld's office.

Defacing any memorial to the fallen is a discusting act.
