Default The Swiss military has wired the entire country to blow up in case they're invaded

Quote:
To make a long story short, McPhee describes two things: how Switzerland requires military service from every able-bodied Swiss citizen—a model later emulated by Israel—and how the Swiss military has, in effect, wired the entire country to blow in the event of foreign invasion. To keep enemy armies out, bridges will be dynamited, and, when possible, deliberately collapsed onto any roads and bridges below; hills have been weaponized to be activated as valley-sweeping artificial landslides; mountain tunnels will be sealed from within to act as nuclear-proof air raid shelters; and much more.

I had no idea. Don't mess with the Swiss!

I knew there was a reason the Vatican still used them to guard the Pope.

A cream pie would be most fitting for this kind of event.

Do you mean cream pie, or custard pie, as the two, in my mind (and no doubt Dowly's, too) are extremely different. Don't google the difference from work, or when the better half's around!

The Swiss also have the highest ratio of nuclear shelters per capita, although the doors on their biggest in the Sonnenberg tunnel didn't close when tested!

I always thought the Swiss "nuclear option" to stop any invaders in their tracks before they even thought of approaching the border was to threaten to blow up the banks and wipe all the accounts from the records.

Actually it's not a real new story. The swiss already had this system of defences in WW2.
The OKW had theoretic plans for invading switzerland already in 1940 but it was estimated that the German losses would be to high and therefore it was never more than an theoretical wargame.

Just for the record in Bavaria and many parts of Germany streetunnels, bridges and mountain roads have explosives chambers chambers or a prechamber shaft to blow up the tunnel or segments of an street.

prechamber shaft in street:

Prechamber shaft in detail:

even remote mountain streets had those shafts:

Place for the firing box (the prefixed cables have been removed)

And it looks like this when 3 of those prechamber shafts are blown up:

Explosives chamber in Bridge at Burglengenfeld, Bavaria

Most of them have been removed in the past years but still many are to find in the land.

Trainig movie for Engineers about the topic (british army movie in german language)
