Jamie and SCS,

Just a quick question on how long y'all tell us if the game is meeting sales expectations?

Well, if they come here and say they're exceeding sales expectations, I'm sure the people here will begin pounding them for add-on packs. In a way, I don't blame em'.

On the OTHER hand, if they say they are falling behind in sales expectations...we might all run out and pick up another retail copy!

So, could work in their favor to report in... :P

A starting point for estimating. Who can come closest?

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columni...rgin-bin_x.htm

This article was written in June (SH3 was released...around March?) -- though other copies of the same article might be out there with an earlier date.

'Silent Hunter III'

www.silenthunteriii.com, $29.99

26,600 units

Become a U-boat commander and experience the thrill of World War II combat on the high seas. The simulation challenges players to work with their crew to hone their submarine tactics as they stalk and outmaneuver enemies on realistic naval missions, all displayed in 3-D and with lots of atmosphere. An online feature lets up to four players tackle missions cooperatively against the game's artificial intelligence
--

Remember that Battlefront was giving about 75% (or was it 90%) back to the developers. 26,600*$50*.75 is just about $1 million dollars, which I think can safely be called the high end for DW.

Actually that figure is probably grossly inaccurate. The article was published in June, but probably written in April, only a few weeks after release. Those of us who were around then remember the first pressing sold out very quickly and there was a 2-3 week gap while UbiSoft restocked their distribution channels. It was probably during this period that the article was written. Hell, even the UbiSoft store sold out virtually overnight.

As well it only accounts for US sales.

Given that UbiSoft is underway with Silent Hunter 4 it is safe to assume that sales for Silent Hunter 3 were well in excess of that number.

But to the question at hand, DW sales figures are probably confidential, but it is safe to assume that "NEVER ENOUGH" is pretty accurate!

We actually don't have a whole lot of feedback from retailers yet. We know how many "sell-in" units there were however we do not know how many of those units "sold-through" at the retailers (vs. units that are still sitting on the shelves).

When I know more I will let you guys know, but the moment we're just as much "in the dark" as you guys (well, maybe we have a very dim flashlight, but it certainly doesn't shine very brightly... :P)

Hopefully we will know something this month, though.

Wouldn't really call that 'good' news - MOST Best Buys likely never stocked the item at all.

My wife bought me a copy of the retail version for my birthday last month (yes, birthday in December, sucks to be me), which was the only copy they had on their shelves. They've received 4 shipments of new items since then, but never another copy of DW.

IE., they didn't both to re-order it.

Now, think about that. If a store orders ONE copy of a game...it 'sells out' in less than 3 weeks...but then never orders a replacement for it...what does that tell *you*?

(Speaking from someone with retail experience, what it means is that the item is being an extremely light seller in most locations, so the fact that this one 'sold out' so quickly is irrelevant. There is always SOMEONE in SOME area that will buy anything, so they are just counting their blessings this was picked off their shelves and looking at national trends to see if they should restock or not - to see if it's an item of general interest or not. That they have not indicates it is not.)

Or stock controllers aren't doing their job.

When I was a stock controller at Tesco a huge retailer in the UK we would have to check that the triggers for reordering were set right.

Thing is we would get a shipment of maybe only 3 copies of a good selling game. It would sell out in days and be counted as an out of stock on the system. Now if it didn't reorder in two days we'd have to see when a delivery was due and how many.

Quite often the triggers would be set wrong and we would have to tell the system this was an in demand product. Also the system would be set to respond after a certain amount had been sold but that wouldn't be possible as we had recieved a smaller amount.

OR there stock fillers are doing a rubbish job, none are being put out on the shelf and the system thinks it is a non-seller. so doesn't re-order.
