That is why I still go around the long way via the Skagerrak. I won't risk the canal. Heard too many stories similar to yours.

I agree, I never take the Canal for the same reason. The added benefit to taking the long route is there is usually something to shoot at in GRID AN and AM

I hit the edge of the canal while in Time Compression. Ruined my day. I'll just cheat and load an earlier save

I just warp back when I get to the start point. Saves the trouble.

I always take the Canal. Plot my own waypoints. Take my time. Enjoy the sights. Never a problem. Unlike real life time compression makes the long way easier and faster. In real life the Canal was built to save time and fuel. That's the way I play it.

I also stay in my assigned grid the entire patrol. The '24' hours thing is a game mechanism left over from the way they originallly planned it. Most unrealistic.

I do the same. However, if there's a contact report really close to the grid I'm in, I'll send a status report to BDU, and wait for their reply before exiting. I like to pretend that they're giving me temporary clearance. I won't go farther than 20 km or so from the assigned grid.

I find I am "pretending" a lot with this game. I think this is a sign of insanity.

More on topic, I just loaded up SH on my home computer (I have this crappy laptop when I'm at college) and installed GWX. Loading up Kiel was amazing. There are so many sights, sounds, and life that just blew me away. I can't even load stock Kiel on my laptop Long story short, I sailed out of there at ahead-slow sans time compression, just taking in the new environment.

Yeah, I must be insane.

Yes. I think you are a bit crazy.

I "pretend" too. You can have infinite fun doing that with the subsims.

Kiel in GWX is awesome. I like the Kiel Canal. I ran into my first minefield on my first patrol. Out near Dover. I lived to run aground.

Time Compression is a must for me. I couldn't ever complete a patrol even from Bergen to AF87 without time compression.
