Need new Mobo, CPU & RAM
Right, it's getting closer to Christmas and my birthday shortly after, so I think
it's a good time to start carefully wishing I get enough money to finally upgrade my rig. Currently, I'm running AMD Athlon X2 64 6000+ and 4GB DDR2 RAM on a ASUS M2N AM2 socket mobo. Anywho, time to upgrade but no idea what I should get. Money wise, 400€ would be the absolute limit. Any suggestions? Mobo: Asus M4A87TD/USB3 AMD 870 AM3 ATX CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition RAM: ??? EDIT: Actually, could go with Phenom II X6 Last edited by Dowly; 10-28-11 at 08:31 AM. |

Are you happy with AMD or would you consider Intel?
And is that cost just for Mobo, RAM and Processor?

Do you plan on SLI/Crossfire?
If so that MSI board is only single PCIe. If not, is there an outside chance that you would in the future?

I'd just been eyeing up that processor, about £160-ish here.

Looks good, maybe a bit heavy on the RAM. (ooh deja vu)
For comparison, I r looking at dis: Gigabyte GA-Z68ZP-UD4 Intel i5-2500k Kingston 4GB kit of 2 (KHX1333C7AD3K2/4G) €360,-, without a mate. Can save a few bucks on the board, doubt many people really need a board like that. (I do, for the frickin USB ports. Actually filled up all 6 on this Asus... ok it's just really shiny). I really really wants it, but I don't really really needs it.

Ordered 12GB, I do a lot of 3d and VFX stuff, Vue, FumeFx etc. take a lot of resources. For example, I made almost photorealistic comparion of the Belize Blue Hole, but don't have the computing power to render it.
If I can get a rig that can handle 3D stuff, hopefully I can start to push myself to the business. Always wanted to be an 3D artists, it's just my rig that has been holding me back. RenderCows help bit still, tends to be a standard to have 8 cores these days, but I can try. Just got GeoControl2 today, which is awesome pair to Vue. I could write my name in GC2 and rednder all the letters as islands in Vue 10. Amazing poop! |

Ah, using it for 3D rendering makes sense, I was under the impression it was just for gaming, which would be a tad extreme.

Tend to go with this what I ordered for another 4-5 years and hope 3D and gaming industry calms down a bit, so I don't have to upgrade that soon. For example the island scenes in Pirates of Caribbean II were rendered in Vue 7 or 8, so they can already make some fancy stuff. I have Vue 10 and the only difference I can really see is a bit faster render times. (and the new spline crap, but GC2 is already for that) |
