Welcome to SubSim!!

Radar won't come into play until later in the 1942 year. Yes, you have the radar equipment showing at the station but "she no workie". The game should have used the radar "covers" that are modeled in the game but they were never implemented. So for a while you'll not have radar (they won't turn on) but, you will have the units displayed on the boat.

It is very difficult, perhaps impossible, to get radar to work when it has not been placed on your boat.

Notwithstanding, I believe there is a wierd guy who created the OTC (Optical Training Correction) mod (also named CapnScurvy coincidentally) who, as part of the mod, created U.S. radar from the start of the war. I am not sure if it is on all boats though, as I haven't played all of them.

I don't know; I've gotten some pretty promising results using tin foil.

So when you play into the year 1942 that means the radar will sweep and pick up the enemy? Seriously.

You will be offered to purchase an SJ radar, when it becomes available, and place it on your boat while you are in port, always check through all your options with the small submarine on the desk while you're in the captains office.

In simple terms, it doesn't magically appear on your boat.

Thanx donna52522. Say, I am trying to get to a marked area when using sub school. I can't find it on the map. I am a noob.

Don't feel bad. When I thought I had mastered all American boats and supermods, I started a campaign in the Atlantic with ATO (Atlantic Theater of Operations) complimented by RSRDC (Lurker's masterpiece.) My UBoat was destroying everything in sight. Then I decided to sink the Bismark before she broke into the open sea in 1941 and blew up the Hood. My crew wanted stardom. So did I. I sailed to the Denmark Strait off the southern tip of Iceland figuring that Lurker, the designer of RSRDC, had modded it into the game. The Bismark transited the Denmark Strait on its way to confront the Hood. My boat arrived at the intercept point in mid May, 1941. The crew was primed to ambush the Bismark. We were loaded, cocked and ready. And there she was! Dinner was about to be served, and what a dinner it was to be! On course and on schedule (just like the Germans!), and radar confirmed it was approaching fast. I turned to close, still on the surface, when my boat was hit by volleys of cannon fire. What the hell? A British cruiser had locked on to my boat, and sunk it before it could dive. Campaign over. I forgot one elementary rule of warfare, which, in the scheme of things, was minor. I was in a UBoat. The Bismark was on my side.

What you want to get to is the big orange star. If you don't see it just scroll out on the map with the mouse wheel.
See this post for info on navigation.

You have air search radar, for planes, form the beginning but you don't get surface search radar, for ships, till mid 42 or so.

Still, a result nonetheless! And a bloody big explosion to boot!! Well worth it I would have said.

Was searching threads for "radar" and stumbled here. This is the funniest thing I've ever heard .... Sounds like something I might do myself.

Just to clarify;
SD radar is air search: it's on every boat, is AI controlled and you never see it (there's no 3d model).
SJ radar is surface search: it's DISPLAYED on every boat but, as mentioned, does not actually work until later in the war when you can acquire it and put it on your boat.

I don't have an SD Radar on my Sugar boat.
I don't think that a starting Porpoise-class has SD radar either... though I never start in them.

I've purchased SD at every career start with any boat in TMO. I don't think RFB offers SD until after a couple patrols. I haven't played stock in a long time, but I think you can get SD from the start in any boat with that too.
