I had experience like that, it was first mission, Eastern British Coastal Waters. This was before I put the OHII Full mod on and the tonnage was 100,000 instead of 70,000. I thought how am I going to do 100k! There is hardly any convoys there, just lone cargo ships.

I approached my patrol area around grid AN73, I stayed there for 24 hrs. I came in contact with Liberty Cargo and sunk her.

Decided after 24 hrs to move up to grid AN52 and check out the area. I figured since there are a lot of ports in AN65 I would at least get a few more lone ships coming out.

I got to AN52 and no sooner than that I almost ran into a large 8 ship convoy around 1 am. They were heading straight for me, heading West. What luck! I went to periscope depth because they were going to pass all around me, I was going to be in middle of convoy!

It was clam and clear night, the moon was almost full on the lower northern sky. It gave my prey a good silhouette for me to fire my tubes at. All I had left of torpedoes was already in my 5 tubes and 1 spare. Through minor engagements in route to my patrol area the others were spent.

I took 4 different shots and the AOB was perfect, I was in a 90 angle sweet spot. 2 torpedoes hit their correct targets, the other 2 I thought missed, but hit their targets. They just took longer, because they were further out. I thought they were a lot closer, the nights can effect a persons ability to judge distance. By this time I took a shot and missed a Larger steamer from my aft tube. It was too close to sub to make a good shoot, I tried anyways!

The remaining convoyed passed me, I surfaced and I sailed through middle at flank speed. With my last torpedo loaded, I fired on a ship and she was hit bad. I finished her off with the deck gun. I went after the Larger Steamer that was aft of me, the one I missed with my aft torpedo. I go close to her while at full speed and ordered Deck Gun to fire at her water line. With The Large Steamer sunk I went after the last two ships that were getting away.

I was already ahead of them after my attack on The Large Steamer. I opened up them once I was in a good firing range with the deck gun. As soon as the first shells hit their deck, they turned on their lights looking for me. I was too far out and the darkness was behind me. The Moon helped my men easily see them and to sink them with the deck gun.

In the end the unescorted convoy was sunk, all 8 of them! 5 Large Steamers, 2 Hog Island and 1 Liberty Cargo. My quota of tonnage was meet with that convoy and the other ship I sunk at my patrol area.

Never say you can't meet a requirement or can't do something, because you never know what Lady Luck Might bring you in the middle of the night.
