The idea that the US invaded Grenada over Beirut is somewhat ludicrous. We invaded because a friendly democratic government in our backyard was overthrown by an unfriendly government in our backyard as well as the (stated) goal of protecting American medical students in the country. Whether or not one agrees with the invasion of Grenada, tying it to Beirut in some sort of Cold War conspiracy theory is disingenuous.

Given the Regan administration's obsession with fighting the great "Evil Empire" and the 'connections' made by members of Regan's own inner circle that the USSR was somehow an instigator of the Islamic Jihad (very much akin to Geo. W.'s people's insistance on Iraq's instigation of 9/11), given the very, very rushed launching of the invasion (tourist maps in place of proper military maps...really?...); given the rather forced and farcical 'rescue' of US citizens (mainly medical students willingly on the island) who were not even aware they 'needed' rescuing; and, finally given how the Regan administration needed something to divert attention from the bonehead blunder in Beirut while also perpetuating the cowboy, tough guy image of the President, no, I really don't see how this is all disingenous...

BTW, take a look at other Regan/Bush I 'problems' (KAL 007, the USS Stark, etc) and the 'coincidental' look-over-here-not over-there actions taken afterwards; it rather strains the term 'coincidence'...

That is going to be the one major problem, the one albatross in the ointment about any war with Iran. Oil prices will go mental, and we can barely afford the prices we're paying now...but if one oil tanker gets hit in the gulf then insurance rates go up, carrying costs go up, and the price at the pumps goes up.

Unless OPEC puts a cap on the price in order to prevent massive profiteering...

This is the telling paragraph. US CPs in Israel during the drill make perfect sense considering the size of the US force on the ground, but the establishment of an IDF post in Germany smells a bit more permanent.

It appears an infrastructure is being built, but for what eventuality?
