Default How to get through Subnets?

So you don't have the external view, and no subnet maps. how do you get around them? Can you surface and go over them? I've seen them and got stuck in them for a while, damaged the boat, etc, but I had the external view so it was child's play. But I wonder what do you do when playing on harder realism settings?! No way can you just get through them!!

That´s the point! You are not supposed to see them!

I just test my luck and try different approaches.

Or you can just raise the periscope, so it´s underwater and observe thru it.

I think you can die from them if you crash em at flank speed, which is possible if you are in TC, since the nets are near the surface of the water. They can't be passed on the surface; at least not by u-boat...

Before the advent of flying spycams, those nets were very dangerous... Not so if you use the futuristic equipment.

For what it is worth here are my experiences:

1. If you are detected close to the entrance containing the net they will engage the net, closing the harbor. During my approaches where I have not been detected the harbor is open. On the flip side, once you are in and start blowing things up they will close the net and you either have to wait it out or find a different exit. At Scappa Flow there are other exits. If memory serves me right they are to the west and north.

2. Once the net is used to close the harbor you cannot go through it or over it without sustaining damage - often fatal damage.

3. Use the periscope to see if the net is engaged. You can view the net at close distance when you are submerged.

4. The other technique is to follow another ship through the entrance containing the net. I have not successfully used this tactic. Obviously, it requires precise timing it overcome the disadvantage of your slow submerged speed.

Hope this helps.

If your using a realistic water mod - then even that is niegh on impossible.

Working around nets is a difficult issue - as are MINES. My method is using the periscope for what little visibility it gives (which is NONE when its dark) - as well as EXTREMELY LOW speed. - 1 or 2 knots max. Yes - that means daylight entries into a harbor..... difficult at best! The low speed means that if you do tap a net, you wont do alot of damage. Mines on the other hand.... well.... lets just say they HURT! I find its useful to find the net, preferably visually, then "follow" it until you get to the midpoint of the bottleneck your trying to get thru, that is usually where the gap is. The other option is to find the net, back off from it a bit, then do a surface sprint over it - best done at night! This can cause some damage if you scrape, so be warned!

Good Hunting!

I'm curious to know how it was done in real life, you see. Because to me thus far it appears a death scenario either way!!! Mines, ok, they'd have maps of mine fields or something like that, but the nets are naturally there in harbour. I suspect it's preciesly for that reason why the harbour sneaks (into the miliary bases) were oh so rare. Because in real life, you can't see what's ahead using the periscope. I suspect going 2knots 3metres from the ground would also stir up some silt and the vizibility would be thrown away. And to that doing it at night - forget it about!!

The techique of following a ship is interesting, but you'd have to see how it moves, and hope it moves slow. 8knts behind it can still be dangerous.

What about putting a torpedo set to impact detonation into the net? Anyone tried that?

Until than, we have the external cam, so we can see the prize and hope we can make it and still have fun!

I just aviod the nets all together. When I get within range of a ship in the harbor I let two fish go but set the depth on them to 1 or .5 feet so they go over the nets. This way I have enough time to watch the kill or run for the hills.

Well in fairness, they do look like some rather heavy netting made out of chains, at that.

Last time I tried to go over one, I blew up.

Try to get around them. There shouldn't really be a solid wall around any units (unless you somehow wound up with my old cranky SCR where I blocked out some of the port units completely before changing my mind and leaving a path in )

You have to spoof it by impersonating a trusted system on the network...

oh, this is about submarines, never mind.
