I ignored it for years. Recently I tried it and beat it first time, then noticed I had it set for 'Practice' rather than 'Exam'.

Did it twice more. Survived both times, but didn't pass.

It happened to me also, and probably others, but as Steve mentioned here, you will get 1500 without making it ..... last time I tried it, I had 9 percent left of the hull....and hard to get my nose over water,

We used to tell people to do the Academy before loading GWX.

My suggestion would be to do the Deck Gun and Torpedo Classes and ignore the Flak class and even the Convoy Attack class. The lesson from the Flak class is that you should dive and not engage planes anyway. The Happy Times single mission is much better for convoy practice and much more satisfying as well. One word of caution though: In that scenario you usually have time to approach the convoy, but in GWX the lone escort spots you almost immediately.
