sorry thats a force of habbit for me. but i do have one question. it looks like i have a pice of wood in the view but nothing happens when i put the mouse on it.

If it's sticking into view from the edge of the frame it's probably the draggable chronometer. Click on the edge you can see and hold it while you drag it down where you can see all of it.

When I got GWX it took me forever to figure out what it was.

you was right. i did get it. i think it's the stop watch. i noticed my deck gun has changed.

what other neat things can be found on this GWX?

No need to read it all. There is a table of contents, so you can look up anything you want. Also there are plenty of us stupid enou...I mean willing to answer any and all questions.

im trying to figure out why it's takeing more torpedoes to get a kill now. and as to why the aircraft in training are shooting at me

It doesn't take more torpedoes, it just takes longer for the ships to sink. This is realistic, and having them blow up spectacularly upon being hit was not.

The Academy scenarios are harder. On the other hand you don't have to do them. GWX gives the full 1500 renown just for completing the Navigation course. Everything else is just practice now, which is why it's harder.
