Default Is SH5 a better game than SH3 GWX?

I have been playing SH3 GWX for years and love it. SH4 if fun and a the WW2 action is in my interest area, but a lot of small issues on handeling the crew detract from it.

Is SH5 like a better SH3 ( graphics ), or way different in other ways.

Have "ALL" of the BUGS been worked out?

Mine you it is not the cost of the game, it's how good it is to play.

Very glad to see that the controlling need to be on line has been fixed.
Though I must say that having Steam controlling Civ 5 is great. All of the updates and patches are downloaded automaticaly while playing the game.

So should I give invest some time in SH5? At age 74 My time is limited.

Thanks for your input. SNAKE1937

While I have only had 5 for a short time, I can say with all confidence that III is still better. Vanilla SH 5 is nothing short of an Alpha release. Darkwraith's UI mod is a must. Likewise, the TDC appears to be broken, thanks to all of the silliness of including an "interactive" crew. As it stands, SH5 has way too many issues and bugs that demand further patching (i.e. "Rudder Right 180 Degrees" ) to come anywhere close to the quality of even stock SH III.

SH III works, SH 5 halfway works...even with mods. Stick with what works.

Considering your situation as you described it, you might want to stick with what you know. SH5 lacks several of the gameplay functions of SH3, and it may be some time before those are added in.

Different in many ways, some of them better and some worse, depending on what you like in the game.

"ALL" of the BUGS haven't been worked out of SH3 yet. There's just been enough work done on it that we tend to forget.

I hope not, considering I got my copy for less than five bucks. SH5 is great to play, but it is quite different.

If you want a major change, give it a go. If you want a better-looking SH3, give it a pass.

It occurs to me, SH5 really isn't a Submarine sim as any of us would think. More of a hybrid between Sim and an RPG in a Das Boat setting; doing neither particularly well.

First person immersion without equal.

Personally, the RPG aspects as well as the sim aspects should be embraced and improved upon. Mainly because I think SH5 is fundamentally different from the previous two games. It's less of a submarine simulation, and more of a Uboat captain simulation. That and i've been playing entirely too many RPG's as of late, so i'm probably on some ill concieved RPG kick at the moment.

Agreed. The graphics are very impressive. Too bad we had to trade in most of our functions and our entire control scheme to get that. I would rather have Ok graphics with all of the old, efficient functions. Eye candy doesn't sink ships efficiently.

That's a perfect description of SH3. Nothing stops you from continuing to play it, and I still do. They felt it was time to experiment with SH5. It didn't work out quite the way they planned, but it's still a fantastic experience. Or it will be once I get a computer that runs it properly.

Default Operating Systems Dictate

In terms of game play and realism SH3/GWX is far better than SH5 - even with all the mods that people have produced for the latter. Unfortunately, my operating system (WIndos 7) dictates what I play. SH3/GWX won't run, so I'm stuck with SH5. Having said that, I've kept my SH3/GWX files in the hope that when MS produces its next operating system it will work again....

A very large number of people play SH3 on Win7 with no problems at all. have you asked in the SH3 forums?

That was good to hear Sailor Steve, cause last I played SH3, was on my XP pro.
For SH5 I now use Windows 7, but I was planning today, to install SH3 on my new PC, where I also play SH5.

So if I get any problems playing SH3/GWX in Windows 7, I'll rush back here and find some threads !

I would say SH5 for these reasons that suits my gameplay

Faster load times
Seriously no watching the red line slowly take forever to load! Not a GWX problem, SH3 was always like that. Annoying but with this faster pc it might no longer be slow?

Graphics.
But yes graphics do not help sink ships but when you do the after effects are super!

RPG
- I like the rpg in SH5 I just wish there was more RPG things to do not enough imho.

The mission objectives:
Providing you have Open Horizons II installed or Lite Campaign cause some tonnage requirements are over the top.

Walking round inside the sub, not that gliding affect which SH4 and I think 3 also had.

The Interface: Better look even at stock, & Darkwraithes UI mod is a good choice,

For enemy AI though SH3 GWX still beats it hands down even SH4 with TriggerMaru overhaul 2 has better enemy AI than SH5, which I decided to load up the other night as I felt like running my trusty Gato class, spotted 3 destroyers on my patrol gonna go sink em all like I do in SH5. My Gato was destroyed.

And you've tried my IRAI mod?

SH3 and SH4 both have a fixed camera system. Walking/ gliding around the boat at all is a modification, not an intrinsic function like SH5. I did greatly enjoy the walking about in SH5. To me, that was the best aspect of the game. It would have been twice as better if the crew was more life like, and less like robotic manikin 's you'd see on a Disneyland amusement park ride.
