I remember an interview some years ago. It was a Danish journalist who interviewed Mel Brooks

He was asked (try to remember as much as I can)

You like to make fun of people, history or situations, are there no limits?

Mel: Offcourse, I could never make fun of the Jews or other minority that have sufferet in our history.

Apparently Mel Brooks doesn't know his own films too well:

Jokes about Jews have the same legitimation as jokes about anyone else, hell it would be discrimination to leave those big-nosed Red Sea pedestrians out of jokes.

I think he was more referring to Holocaust jokes, an understandable point of view. An analogy would be that jokes about women are ok, but jokes about raped women are not the most funny.

It was about holocaust he didn't want to make fun of (movies).
