I remember when playing SH1 that due to the old graphics it was a bit hard to obtain range on pix-elated targets although in auto mode you had it right away.
Well, playing and doing things manually how was range to target obtained using the TBT? |

![]() My recollections of SHCE are a bit hazy, but I do remember problems along those lines. The best solution I was able to come up with, was to cut out a transparent piece of plastic, and use a marker to make a reticle on it. Then, when using the TBT, I would have to hold this up to the monitor and maybe pause the game, to obtain the angular height of the target. |

Great, if you want to dig through more SHCE SH1 related files, some additional gems are located at:
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/PacificThunder/ I would like to see them put to good use and make someone who likes this great old DOS classic, Silent Hunter I, SHCE, happy :) Happy Hunting! Art

Just to note....all these files there about SHCE do they actually help you figure range by visual contact? Regarding the old non 3d graphics I mean...

Yes, by mast height and plotting board if you like. It is up to you how hard core you want it.
SHCE was ahead of the pack in what SSI attempted to produce but was at the wrong end of the graphics and old DOS operating system that was soon outdated. Kim's tools are the best IMO Happy Hunting! Art

Regarding range estimation via TBT, the real subs didn't have any because the TBT was just intended to be a bearing line transmitter. What happens is that early in the war doctrine precluded surface attacks at night (And for that reason no TBTs were installed either) and by the time they changed that, the subs already had radar and the most perfect way of measuring distance was that, hence the TBT did not need it.
To conduct manual TDC surface attacks in SH1 you must therefore if you want to be historically accurate do them only after you have radar, and follow this procedure: - Lock the target on the TBT, so the view follows it - Input AOB and estimated speed into TDC and start position keeper - Go to radar station and read range to the contact you have chosen as objective (Use the bearing to it from TBT as reference to find it in the radar screen before you have PPI) - Return to TDC station and enter the range - Now you are ready to go to the TBT and shoot when you want
