If you sink a neutral you start a personal war with its nation of origin that will last 24 hours of game time. They don't declare war on Germany, but they do declare war on *you* and they will attack you on sight.

Regarding docking at these points, I've seen differing comments - do you folks find you can receive and award medals at them??

You can if you are using SH3 Commander, but the game itself will not give you that option.

Also, no matter what, you cannot change your boat's equipment or influence your torpedo loadout.

Actually you start a personal war with all neutral nations for 24 hours, there is no distinction. I remember many careers back in the pitch black of night I sunk a freighter belonging to the USA near the Irish coast

. A few hours later I was getting shot at by a Hurricane belonging to Ireland
