"Never existed." And even if it had, I think it would need a nuclear explosion to get off the ground. Don't get me wrong, it looks like something the Russians would build, they're into that sort of thing, and they probably would have made it fly somehow, and then it probably would have crashed and been abandoned or been too expensive to fly and abandoned left to rust in a hangar somewhere. In regards to the real Big Boy, the 4-8-8-4, yeah...even though I'm not a big a fan of US locos as I am of UK locos...I'd still love to see one at full bore working a steep gradient with a max load...what a sight and sound that would be! ![]() |

Sure looks like the Engineer is giving it the boot eh?
Not surprising I guess considering that loco is probably pulling a mile (or more) long string of loaded boxcars up a typical Rocky Mountain grade.

Well, here's a big boy for its time,
![]() and it flew...barely. ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witteman-Lewis_XNBL-1 What the article doesn't say is that the XNBL-1 had a minimum speed of 65 mph, which meant that the range between maximum and stall was only 31 mph. Also it had the support of General Billy Mitchell, and was informally nicknamed "Mitchell's Folly".

Are there any (guesstimated) specs of this Russian 'flying wing'? The pictures on that link seem outrageous, I mean .... 3 barrel heavy guns as if it is a BB?
I wonder how it compares to the 'Spruce Goose', ... which did fly! But only once. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_H-4_Hercules
