I read some time ago, that only a small minority of soldiers in combat (~10%) fire targeted shots. The rest justs shoots into the general direction of the enemy, or just fires to calm down their own nerves. And this was about trained soldiers. With untrained combatants, like the Libyan rebels, the numbers must be significant smaller.

But firing from the hip is so yesterday:

If i remember shooting MAG this way used to be part of military training at a time.
As for combat shooting-it may depends on situation and what you had been hammered into the little primal brain.
Sometimes you can act correctly simply on impulse.
