I'd rather die by destroyers or airplanes too if had to pick. And I agree that mines are "dumb" because they can destroy your boat and crew without warning. But that's the way it propably was and my choice is to make mines work that way.
 It's great to have a possibility to tweak the game the way one want's to play.
