I read some place (do not know if it is true) that some american bought two MiG-29s from Maldova but he must not have had a good agent look at them because they where not in very good shape when they arrived in the US and it was claimed that the government advised the man that they where un flyable supposedly they where given to the Air Force and destroyed.I think he only paid a few 100k for each which seems a bit low for a MiG-29.

I have also heard "Air Force" urban legends that we acquired several SU-27s and MiG-29s for use at Nellis for Red Flag this is not true I have a very good friend who is an intel officer with the USAF and he was stationed at Nellis and trained people for Red Flags we do not have any such aircraft(or at least we no longer do) what we do is train with nations that do such as Indonesia (my friend went on a TDY from Kadina AB Japan for just this purpose back in 2006 he has some pretty cool pictures from that TDY)and fly aircraft in a manner that the MiGs tend to fly in.I see that the wiki articles mention this but then again it is Wikipedia I do not trust everything posted there as the truth. The part about the FAA listed stuff is probaly true as you can look that up yourself.

I can't even imagine how much it costs to maintain these old jets.

But I guess the saying "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" is true.

So, if you could afford one, what is the one plane you would want to own for recreational flying?

For me it might be the Spad XIII. I have been a fan of WWI aircraft for many years.

Tricky question that one...with my flying skills probably something easy to land. Hurricane perhaps or a Spit. Not a 109, as much as I like them the undercarriage replacement cost would be far too much.

I'd have to get a later model Spit though, as much as I love the Mark Ones the coolant system just doesn't agree with me. Accu-sim has taught me that...

Ok, when I wrote to pick an aircraft you could afford, I was assuming it would include the skill to fly it without killing yourself.

....and has good undercarriage.

You can fold it anytime too.
