The map icon thing seems fairly buggy in GWX (and it may be true in stock).
Red = a kill for you. Gray = a kill for the weather or another German unit (but sometimes you get credit) Blank = probably you get the credit. I long ago quit using it for scorekeeping. Your patrol record is always accurate through the K key.
