A good place to start. Just remember, this only has bearing on the issue of "knowing" cerebrally that something is an experiment, vs internalizing the situation. As for isolation experiments... Here is a good one. lsda.jsc.nasa.gov/books/ground/chambers.pdf Enjoy the reading! EDIT: Also - look up the Mars 500 experiement. 6 men in isolation for 520 days.......

All experiments are based on enclosed or restricted spaces.
They don't apply to a situation where you are the only person on the whole Planet. While on the Planet? You can never be certain that you are the only one and the search for others is going to be enuff to drive you nearly forever. Unless your a weak minded person. In which case you whould will lay down and die any way. |

There are many people who live years with little or no social interaction. I think it's quite doable provided a suitably minded person has a task to keep themselves occupied.

Yep. And also don't underestimate the number of people out there who are completely antisocial or sociopathic. The brain works in odd ways, and occasionally genetics can throw some real curve balls. I think it's unfair to assume that everyone's brain works the exact same way and perceives the world as fundamentally social. What's inconceivable to most 'normal' people may well be even a desirable thing to one in a million.

I imagine that even with company, being stuck in the same place with the same person for months on end would result in mental deterioration. I do believe that the two men in command of the missile launch control at specific silos in the States have a pistol sidearm with them. I imagine that several dozen feet under solid concrete and steel and heavy bolted doors that this weapon would not be for being used against an enemy incursion... |

Which one? Antisocial or sociopathic? Or both?

Anyone read Richard Byrd's "Alone".
It was the story of how, in 1934, Richard Byrd spent 4 months in a South Pole weather station ... uh..well... alone. ![]() I remember reading that as a kid and even then I had my asocial tendencies. I thought to myself "man that would have been great!"
