Can't really add much to what Neon has posted @ #42 other than....if your not sure, don't do it.

Neal, SubSim and this community of ours deserves nothing less.

You know, after 4 pages on this topic it still appears that the original question hasn't been answered.

So maybe I'll ask it a different way: Has Neal either added the "fully astericked" rule, or, has Neal empowered his Moderators to add new forum rules?

I'm pretty sure that rule read the same when I joined two years ago.

Well, it isn't on the Rules page right now. So by "added" I just meant that it exists by Neal's authority, even if it hasn't been physically added to the rules page yet.

The answer is no. Reread my post regarding a moderators' discussion of that, and reread Neon's post. It's on a case-by-case basis, and the biggest problem isn't with random asteriscks, but when it's absolutely obvious what was meant. Comic swearing is an iffy problem as well, if for no other reason than that I've gotten away with it myself. I don't do it anymore, but some of the keys are fun to play with. Even then, when it's blatantly obvious it's a problem.

As for Neal's authority, he's a pretty easy-going guy. If you cross a line you will ususally be warned first, especially if it's not a clear violation.

Why is anyone bringing their Anger to this Website.

Neal didn't create this site as an Anger Management Website.

Maybe he should create yet another Forum that will clog up his Bandwidth for all to Vent into.

Edit: 8-26-2011 Anger as a reason was posted by more than one of the posters.

They were their when I joined in "2006" Believe it or not All I, actually read the rules and, even broke 1 or 2 of them or 3, 4+ and was handled appropriately per incident.

I was in the wrong btw. Simple rules to understand and follow. . Neal.

Well honestly, swear words have never been "Anger Centric" for me, I just say them, they are just words after all, and in person if people have a problem with me using them then they can Bugger off.

It falls under obscenities and foul speech part of the rules, which I already answered. People are not supposed to be using foul speech to begin with, even though we do have a filter. The filter is just a safe guard so that people don't have to read a long swear filled spew by some angry person, not a crutch to keep your written text clean. As I cannot tell if the filter did the ******** or you did it yourself, I have to treat both the same. This is how I interpret the rules, if Neal disagrees with my interpretation I am sure he will let me know.

Also FYI it would take 5 bad language infractions (unless they were extreme) in 10 days to earn a time out in the brig, and I am not waiting in the shadows rubbing my hands eagerly for the next person to pounce on. I am actually far happier when I do not have to do anything as a moderator. So I would not get too worried about this.

I apologize for missing this post, Steve. I appreciate the clarification.

So, taking Steve's and Neon's posts here into consideration, along with the forum rules as they are posted, it would appear that the current state of things is as follows:

1. Moderators are not authorized to create new forum rules.
2. Fully astericked "swears" are permissible, unless the word that the astericks apparently masked is obvious. This is apparently Neal's rule but has accidentally been omitted from the official Forum Rules page.
3. Neon Samurai will issue infractions for asterisk chains, regardless of whether the asterisk chain is permissible under the rules.
4. Neon Samurai will cease to issue infractions for permissible asterisk chains if asked to by Neal.

Is that accurate?

Guys, we shouldn't play dumber than we are, the rules are not written in Marsian - or is this Marsianic? Not too complicated. Anyway, I don't endorse them, but I try to see it as if I am a guest in Neal's house.

Personally I have no problem with swearing, as I use swear words in my every conversation, often subconscious, as I see nothing bad about it. I mostly write here as I speak. So (bed-)sheet happenz , but at least I try to think about the language, just as I do when I visit friends with young kids - those bastards pick up new words so easy!

I think it's a cultural thing, as someone pointed out before. An American relative once complained about me using the f-word in every second sentence. He is not a nun, but he said when I talk like this, Americans regard it as primitive and uneducated. Well, that's what I am - but I got the point .

No one is playing dumb here. Neon issued a warning that exceeds the scope of the forum rules. This has quite reasonably caused some confusion as to what the forum rules actually are. We're all in agreement that we should behave in Neal's house, that isn't the issue.

Check out the time of my last post, I can't type that fast. It was not directed at you specifically, but at everybody.

"No vulgarities, obscenities, hate speech, or foul language" looks crystal clear to me.
If the filter is programmed to "asterisk out" some of these words, then then I can't see much substance in your point #2.

****, into what position did you bring me? Here I am, defending rules that I do not appreciate...
